Mass. House Speaker Ron Mariano cleared by doctor to work after falling at home

Massachusetts House Speaker Ron Mariano suffered injuries at home in early January while carrying boxes up the stairs in his Quincy home, a spokesperson said Tuesday.

The speaker, who is 79, hurt his shoulder “and the right side of his body,” the spokesperson, Ana Vivas, said in a statement Wednesday evening.

“He has been cleared by his doctor to continue his usual activities and has been referred to physical therapy,” Vivas said.

According to Vivas, the Quincy Democrat has been working remotely, but was at the State House on Tuesday for in-person meetings. He will be back in the State House next week for meetings about a sweeping energy bill that would weaken the state’s 2030 climate mandate to lower greenhouse gas emissions by making the target non-binding. The bill would also gut the state’s energy efficiency program, Mass Save.

“His schedule will continue to allow for remote work as needed,” Vivas said.

The incident isn’t the first time the Speaker has had to work remotely because of health reasons.

In 2021, Mariano was hospitalized and fitted with a pacemaker during a trip to Florida.

Mariano, who first joined the House in 1991, became Massachusetts’ oldest speaker since at least the Civil War when he was elected to lead the House in 2020. He told the Globe last year plans to seek re-election this fall.

Sabrina Shankman and Matt Stout of the Globe staff contributed to this report.
