Retro Room opens below Back Bay Social, with TV dinners and disco balls

Coming Soon: Retro Room opens beneath Back Bay Social on Saturday, Jan. 24 (867 Boylston St.). The mid-century-style listening lounge has turntables and vinyl playing jazz, soul, funk, disco, and indie, plus comfort food and a dance floor.

On the equally retro menu, you’ll find house-made fish sticks and a daily TV dinner with bygone delicacies like sloppy Joes and Salisbury steak. To drink: shareable cocktails served in disco balls. Visit nightly from 5 p.m., and linger at the bar until 2 a.m.

Reopenings: In the Fenway, Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar reopens as The Citizen (1310 Boylston St.) after closing for a renovation. The raw bar is gone: Instead, find a larger bar area and an updated cold-weather menu, including chestnut soup with a wild boar sausage roll, Iberian pork collar braised in turmeric tomato sauce, and potato gnocchi with gorgonzola cream, alongside plenty of whiskey. Fortify yourself from 4:30 p.m. daily.

Closings: Down the block, Time Out Market (401 Park Drive) shutters on Friday, Jan. 23, citing inconsistent foot traffic, rising costs, and impending lease renewal. The food hall opened to high hopes in 2019, drawing local luminaries like Tony Maws (Craigie on Main), Tim Cushman (O Ya), and Michael Schlow (Tico) to its kiosks.

Pop-ups: In better food hall news, The Lineup (250 Devonshire St.), chef John Fraser’s mini food hall inside The Connector at Winthrop Center, launches Ramen Spot, a seasonal pop-up, this month. Take a break from work to slurp ramen with pork belly, chicken, or tofu, plus steamed buns.

Coming soon: MEZŌ Mediterranean opens in Dedham Square (551 High St.) in March, with 25 seats and a mix of heartier and grab-and-go delights: moussaka, lamb chops, souvlaki, and gyros, plus dips, parfaits, and salads for those on the run. There’s beer and wine, too. It’s run by the affable team behind Dedham House of Pizza down the street.
