Temperatures on Wednesday afternoon hit above the 50-degree mark in many locations, including the Boston area, to make the top 20 warmest second weeks of January on record. (For the curious, the record high for Greater Boston on Jan. 14 is 69 degrees, set in 1932.)
Quick look Thursday
On Thursday, we still have a southwest flow of air, but it won’t be quite as warm as Wednesday. Temperatures will begin the day around 40 and then end up in the mid- to upper 40s in the afternoon, with a slight chance of a morning rain shower. Expect some pockets of fog as you head out the door.
Skies should actually become at least partly sunny about the same time that the winds are increasing and turning a bit gusty. Some of us may see some gusts of wind near 30 mph by Thursday night and into Friday. It’s certainly notable, and with colder temperatures, it’s going to add wind chill back into the forecast.

Friday: Cold returns with single-digit morning wind chills
Temperatures will drop sharply from those highs in the 40s on Thursday down into the teens Thursday night. When you get up on Friday, the wind chill values will be somewhere between 8 and 18 degrees and remain in the teens and 20s the rest of the day.

If you are a morning person, look southeast about an hour before sunrise, and if you have a clear view of the horizon, you may catch that beautiful crescent moon as it rises around 5:56 a.m. Less than 5 percent of the moon will be visible. Antares, a supergiant star, will be visible to the upper right at that time.

Actual temperature readings on Friday should reach near freezing under sparkling blue skies and sunshine illuminating the bare landscape.
The weekend features variable conditions, but no major storms are in sight.
