Woman’s body recovered from water off Plum Island in Newbury


The body of an unidentified woman was recovered from the water off Plum Island in Newbury Thursday, and a death investigation is underway, law enforcement officials said.

Police responded to a report of a body in the water near Harvard Way at around 11:45 a.m., according to a statement from Essex District Attorney Paul F. Tucker’s office.

Newburyport Fire and Rescue, the United States Coast Guard, the Salisbury Police Department Drone Unit, and the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing Unit, the statement said.

Authorities searched the area and Newburyport fire recovered the body of an identified female north of Fordham Way, the statement said.

The state medical examiner’s office transported the body and will identify the cause and manner of death, Tucker’s office said.

The investigation is ongoing.

No further information was released late Thursday night.
