While the new girls’ hockey No. 1, Methuen/Tewksbury, avoided falling victim to the curse, two Top 5 girls’ hockey teams were defeated on another thrilling Wednesday night of high school sports.

Milestones
· Taunton senior Will Buffington celebrated his 100th career wrestling win with a 46-33 dual-meet victory over King Philip.

· Lowell participated in its first girls varsity dual wrestling meet, defeating North Andover, 36-18.
· Milton girls’ hockey senior Sabrina Stone scored twice in a 4-2 win over Needham to reach 50 career goals.
· On Tuesday, Ipswich junior Alana Novello broke the school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.91 seconds during a 72-27 victory against Hamilton-Wenham.
Upset central
On the day we addressed the Globe’s girls’ hockey curse, the No. 3 and No. 5 girls’ hockey teams stumbled Wednesday.
No. 7 Duxbury, which had been promoted to No. 1 in the Globe’s Top 20 poll but then suffered back-to-back losses, got back on track by shutting out No. 3 Hingham, 2-0, behind 16 Brooklyn Metzler saves and goals from Shae Martin and Addy Harrington. Correspondent Mike Puzzanghera had full coverage of this Patriot League showdown.
No. 11 Archbishop Williams enjoyed goals from Catherine Lacey and McKenzie Lima-Towers to take down No. 5 Notre Dame (Hingham), 2-1.
Best finishes
· Sophomore Connor Curley had both the tying goal and winning goal as Gloucester boys’ hockey rallied from down 4-1 by scoring four times in 3-minute, 6-second stretch during the final five minutes of the third period to stun Beverly, 5-4.
· Stoughton/Brockton boys’ hockey senior defenseman Will Corvino notched the overtime winner with 1:09 remaining in a 4-3 win aginst Bellingham.
· Joe Medeiros delivered his second OT winner of the season to push Martha’s Vineyard boys’ hockey to a 1-0 win over Sandwich.
· On the girls’ side, Kaylee Dinkle netted the equalizer with six seconds left in regulation for No. 6 St. Mary’s, then Alyssa Norden tipped home Dinkle’s shot 99 seconds into the extra session for a 3-2 win over No. 12 Malden Catholic.
· Junior captain Casey Pestilli slammed home the overtime winner for Sandwich in a 4-3 win over Dennis-Yarmouth.
Eight stars
Maddie Cantor, NSA — The junior delivered her fourth hat trick of the season, adding two assists in a 5-1 win over Quincy/North Quincy.
James Crowell, Bourne — The senior captain put up 6 points — two goals, four assists — to beat Apponequet/Old Colony, 7-0.
Matty Donovan, Westwood — The senior put on a show, totaling four goals to beat Dedham, 9-5.
Cam Frazier, Duxbury — The sophomore provided his first career double-double, posting 21 points and 10 rebounds to beat Whitman-Hanson, 67-51.
Kingston Maxwell, Abington — No matter the outcome, the senior continued his torrid pace, putting up 37 points and 11 rebounds in a 69-55 loss to Oliver Ames.
Juliet Platt, Brookline — The freshman was unstoppable, potting five goals in a 7-2 win over Brookline.
Xavier Valcorba, Middleborough — The junior notched a 6-point night, scoring twice and dishing out four assists in an 8-4 victory over East Bridgewater.
Alice Wallerstein, Lincoln-Sudbury — The senior was immense cleaning the glass, collecting 16 rebounds to go with 8 points in a 38-27 triumph over Maynard.
College corner
· Wesleyan sophomore Zach Wolinski, a North Andover graduate, was named NESCAC men’s basketball Player of the Week after netting a career-high 26 points with five rebound and two assists in an 84-71 win over Williams. He followed with a 22-point effort to beat Middlebury.
· UMass Dartmouth freshman Michael Veegh, a Bishop Stang graduate from Tiverton, R.I., and junior Ewan McLeod, a Bristol-Plymouth graduate from Raynham, were tabbed as Little East Conference men’s track Rookies of the Week. Veegh won the 600 in 1:26.72 at the Wesleyan Winter Invite. McLeod finished in a three-way tie for first in the high jump (6 feet, 4.75 inches).
Commitment corner
· Merrimack junior dual-threat quarterback Ayden Pereira, a Central Catholic graduate, announced he is transferring to Georgia State. Pereira played in three games in 2024, completing 28 of 46 attempts for 416 yards and five touchdowns. He then became the Warriors’ starter last fall, finishing with 1,813 passing yards and nine passing TDs, while rushing for a team-high 853 yards and seven scores.
