Blustery winter weather returns Friday as temperatures plunge across New England

The temperatures over-performed on Thursday, with many areas once again exceeding 50 degrees for another beautiful January afternoon. But colder weather is definitely on the horizon with readings quickly falling after sunset Thursday night. This will put us in the upper teens to lower 20s for the morning commute on Friday.

But with a breeze out of the west, wind chill values will begin the day in the single digits and teens and only climb into the 20s in the afternoon. The actual air temperatures will only reach near freezing in the afternoon. We will get to enjoy some nice sunshine, however.

Saturday: Rain, light snow west of I-495

A little weather system moves through the area on Saturday with some showers and some wet snow in the higher elevations and north and west of Interstate 495.

There could be a coating to an inch of snow in those areas, but with the temperatures just above freezing, slick roads shouldn’t be a major issue. Any precipitation comes to an end between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday evening, followed by mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 20s.

It’s then a mostly cloudy day with temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s in the afternoon on Sunday and a slight chance for a little bit of light precipitation.

Next week, the temperatures are going to be below average. How many days reach freezing is still a bit of a question, but we are done with the 40s and 50s for a while.
